The Science Behind “Social?”

I find coding to be a bit of a necessary evil in modern design. But sometimes I find myself enjoying solving the challenges logic provides us with.

The science of displaying the activity on someone’s Facebook is really way more complicated than it sounds.

During a trial period of  a group of different people, with different circles of friends; we found that during even the busiest period of the day there was only a maximum of 50% of a users friends list online at the peak of activity. If we were to translate this statistic into an equally weighted display – the display would only ever reach half way.

This is where the Social? device comes into play. Combined with the web based app – Social records the activity on your Facebook friends list and weights the display so that it is more relevant to the number of people active on your Facebook at any given time.
